Olonana Camp has introduced an innovative wetland system to cleanse its wastewater before returning it to the natural environment. Sanctuary Lodges commissioned Dee Raymer, an expert in wetlands technology, to install a ‘constructed wetland’ to purify all the wastewater from Olonana’s tents, kitchens, staff quarters, and management housing.
Through a series 3 of carefully constructed ponds, this system purifies the water naturally, while also creating a habitat for a diversity of birds and other species. Olonana is one of only two hotels Camps and Lodge in Masai Mara Kenya that has a fully operational constructed wetland. Simply put, the water passes through a succession of connected ponds, and along the way, microbes, plants, and other life forms use the pollutants in the water as nutrients, utilizing them and eventually purifying the water.
Olonana’s wetland has a dedicated wetlands caretaker whose job is to ensure that it continues to operate effectively. We hope that Olonana’s system will inspire many other Hotels in Kenya to create similar systems for their waste. Through the Global Foundation, Olonana Camp is involved with a tree planting project to reintroduce the forest around the Mara. Guests are able to partake in the project and help with this good cause
The jewel in Africa’s crown, Maasai Mara is host to the most spectacular array of wildlife. Her 320 square kilometers of open savannah, woodlands and tree-lined rivers creates an eco-system which supports huge numbers of bird and mammal species. The western border of the park is the spectacular Siria Escarpment, and together with the acacia dotted plains, creates scenery of stunning beauty.
Lion are found in abundance throughout the park as are elephant, giraffe, a variety of gazelle species and zebra. Cheetah and leopard are also regularly seen and, if lucky, you may also find rhino. Game viewing is never dull in the Mara, and patience is often rewarded with unique sightings: a pride of lion stalking their prey; a solitary leopard retrieving its kill from the high branches of an acacia tree; male impala sparring to attract females into their harem; or even a herd of elephant protecting their young from opportunistic predators. The annual wildebeest migration traditionally is present in the Mara from August-October and at this time nature’s dramas unfold before your very eyes at every turn.
Olonana Camp features 14 spacious permanent tents, 12 tents are tastefully appointed with two comfortable queen-size beds, 1 tent with a king size bed (suitable for a Couple on a honeymoon safari) and one tent with two twin beds, ensuite bathrooms with showers, and large, riverview verandahs. Enjoy a quiet evening drink, cozily seated on your verandah, watching the hippo frolicking just before heading out for their nightly grazing.
Olonana’s superbly well-trained chefs will create a sumptuous dinner or breakfast, served al fresco, perched on the Siria Escarpment overlooking the river, with a wide selection of fine wines and spirits. Or perhaps you would prefer a romantic picnic deep in the wilderness or even sink into the comfortable sitting area with some books from the camp’s library lounge, and then enjoy a delicious dinner in the dining room overlooking Olonana’s private section of the Mara River.

This area has been untouched by any kind of tourism or development and offers the discerning client a guarantee of privacy.
Most importantly, while the Mara has a reputation of being over congested with mass tourism, Cottar’s have kept the secret of our area for years – no hot air balloons flying overhead, no minibuses buzzing around, no nearby lodges or low flying aircraft to disturb your special moments. The area is more akin to being in the expansive Serengeti National Park, but with the advantage of ‘off the road’ driving due to the very low vehicle density of the area, and the fact that we can walk and operate ‘night drive’ activities in our community concession.
