Years ago, camps like this were cruelly called “fat camps,” but the fitness camps today are quite different.  Let’s face it.  We have so many obese and overweight kids these days that your child is certainly not alone.  Looking into today’s fitness and weight loss camps for your child may be the very best thing you’ve ever done for them!

When you’re looking for a camp to send your child to, make sure it offers four things.

1: It Approaches Weight Loss Healthily  – While it seems like a no-brainer, you want to ensure that the camp you choose doesn’t follow the “old-school” way of thinking. What you want to see from the camp is that they offer your child lots of healthy food choices, none of which will leave your child hungry. Make sure you know what the menu looks like. It should include lots of lean protein, whole grains, non-fat dairy, fruits and vegetables.

2:  Another thing to consider is whether or not plenty of exercise activities are offered along with opportunities to get emotional support or counseling from professionals.  Many overweight children also suffer from self-esteem and other emotional problems.  Combatting them is important in the path to living a healthier life.

3:  Make sure that realistic goals are set.  Children lose weight differently than adults.  A lot of their “weight loss” will come in the form of “growing into” their weight.  Sure, pounds can and should be lost while at camp, but you don’t want counselors to promise that they’ll send back a thin child!  Weight lost too quickly always comes back and is NEVER supportive of a healthy system.

4:  It Offers Fun Exercise-Related Activities – Whenever your child goes to camp, they are going to miss you. Make sure that you have a camp that will include exercising activities that are fun for the kids. Remember how bored you are by exercising; it’s no different for your child. If a child is having fun exercising, they’ll want to continue with the program. With everything they’ll learn at the camp, they can bring home some interesting and fun ideas for your family to do.

Sports, nature, languages and social activities are the keywords to talk about Scuola Leonardo da Vinci Milano’s new Junior Camps.

Our Summer and Winter Junior Camps are located in Polsa, a beautiful mountain area in the heart of Trentino region, famous for its winter ski-slopes and for breath-taking surroundings, offering a great variety of activities both for winter sports lovers or  a relaxing summer in an enchanting scenery.

Our Junior Camps, especially designed for young people looking into an international study holiday, combine language lessons, recreational and social activities, sports, fun and time spent with new friends.

All students will have the opportunity to study Italian or English in an easy and active way, learning quickly and easily with professionally trained teachers. After class, they will have plenty of time to enjoy all sorts of winter and summer sports, such as skiing and snowboarding for Winter Junior Camps (both with a certified instructor or individually under one of our coordinator’s supervision) and playing tennis, soccer, volley, basket, horse-riding or swimming during Summer Junior Camps.

Evenings will be dedicated to social games to promote interaction: cooking pizza, dancing or singing karaoke, playing table-games will also allow students to practice their new language skills and make friends to have fun with.

It’s pretty rare for a child to never be naughty. Make that extremely rare and parents who see their son or daughter misbehaving should not panic. All kids are naughty at some time or another. But if that behavior becomes really bad and starts to impact on the family, it may well be time to consider finding some help for your situation. One such form of help is a boot camp.

Now the term boot camp may conjure up all sorts of frightening images of young kids on route marches with a heavy pack on their back and a loud military type leader shouting orders. That is entirely the wrong image as most boot camps for kids are designed to help their charges not to punish them. In fact a rebellious child who believes they are being punished will more than likely simply dig in their heels and the whole experience will be a waste of time and money.

Sometimes the parents may feel guilty as their child heads off to boot camp. This is not necessary. Sure the parents will enjoy the time away from the troublesome teen but they are sending their son or daughter away to help the child. And besides, many kids who go to boot camp end up really enjoying the experience. So parents, don’t feel guilty.

Kids who head off to boot camp are not trying to be sent away from home. They may have a condition, a mental or physical problem, which causes them to misbehave. Parents should be very careful not to prejudge their child’s actions. Having them assessed by a medical professional is a good step. And if the benefits of a boot camp are thought to be the answer, find the right camp as soon a possible. Remember the teen may not even want to be naughty and if you can help them, you will have done a huge favor for everyone and not only your child.

Parents should understand that the teenage years are difficult and can be horrendous if the child mixes with the wrong crowd. Kids today are under a lot of pressure to conform and the availability of drugs and alcohol makes the temptation very real. If your child has a condition like ADHD or depression, it can be easy for their behavior to become strange and even harmful. Naughty behavior often has a root cause and parents should always try to understand. Be slow to judge and quick to help.

Boot camps offer help to different types of naughty children. For those who are slacking and need a short, sharp shock to lift their game, a month-long boot camp can quickly whip them into shape. If a teen has gone off the rails and is inwardly afraid of their lifestyle, a boot camp can remove them from their dangerous environment and give them encouragement and advice on how to life a healthy and happy lifestyle.

Boot camps are not for everyone but for many they can be a life changing experience.

This type of camp may be ideal but there are certain factors to consider. Think about all the possibilities and weigh up the pros and the cons. You will sometimes find teens from a strong Christian family going off the rails. How can that be so? A bible-based upbringing would surely see all young people respecting their parents and living a wholesome life; if only that were true.

So the first myth you need to toss aside is that a teen from a Christian home will automatically stay out of trouble. And if your child is in trouble, then you must ask why and in what way?

Christian boot camps are like most teenage boot camps except that they obviously have a Christian-centered basis for their programs. But if your teenager is anti-authority, is clashing with you or his or her teachers, then the last place you may want to send your teen is a boot camp with another authority figure. This time it’s the church and even God. Of course if the staff are professional and aware of troubled teens and the ‘them and us’ attitude, then a Christian boot camp might be just the ticket.

Remember troubled teens are often confused with deep seated feelings of distrust and anger. If you as a parent choose to put your teen in a Christian boot camp, you might be simply giving your child another authority figure to oppose. The secret of any boot camp, Christian or not, is to get the residents, the trouble teens to focus on themselves and to stop blaming others.

Lots of physical activity and well-planned therapy sessions both one to one and in groups, give teens the chance to have their say and to hear from their peers. The fact that the staff members are practicing Christians is a benefit but is not essential to the success of your child’s stay in the camp.

Of course as a Christian parent, you want your son or daughter raised in the ways of Lord but a boot camp which enables your child to lose their anger and become responsible and caring young people is truly the name of the game. That is the best possible solution for your troubled teen.

Try and think like your troubled teen. They may see you as the parent who is trying all sorts of tricks to gain control, to continue treating them as a young child. That’s not how you are thinking but persuading your teen of the truth of the matter is more than half the battle.

Think forward to the end result. You want a life-changing experience for your son or daughter. As a Christian you believe that can come through your faith. But regardless of the religious aspect of the camp, and prayer can be an empowering factor, the most important thing is the mental success of your child. You want the boot camp to help your teen lose their troubles, settle down and become a force for good. Any good boot camp can make that change happen including any good Christian boot camp.
